This article will show you how to setup the DHCP service on a Linksys Router in order to in order to assign IP address dynamically to your network computers.
This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to do basic Linksys router setup. It falls under the CCNA syllabus’s objective “Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN”.
Configuring the DHCP function is an easy task. Just follow these steps:
Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.
Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrator’s username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.
Step 3: Scroll down to the network Setup section, and select the enable option if the DHCP function is already disabled.
Step 4: Enter the starting IP address. It is assigned to the first computer requesting an IP address.
Step 5: In the Maximum Number of DHCP users, enter the number of IP addresses that the router is allowed to assign. In most cases, this is the number of your network computers.
Step 6: Enter the client lease time. This is the amount of time a network computer can keep using the IP Address offered by the router. For example, if this value is 6 hours, then the actual computer’s IP address is valid for 6 hours. After 6 hours, the computer’s IP address is renewed and the Linksys router assigns a new IP address to it. The default value of the Client Lease Time parameter is zero, which means one day.
Step 7: Enter the IP address(es) of the DNS server(s) that a network computer will use to translate Domain Names into IP addresses. For example, when you type http ://www.ciscoccnabootcamp.com in the web browser, it try to find the IP address associated with the domain name ciscoccnabootcamp.com by contact the DNS server(s) configured on your operating system, and then open the web page http ://www.ciscoccnabootcamp.com.
Step 8: Enter your WINS server’ IP address in the WINS Server field.
Step 9: Click Save Settings.
