Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS Unit Review

Many consider the Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS to be the premier golf GPS on the market. Although, it’s not the market leader, as far as features, the Sonocaddie can’t be touched. It holds plenty of course information. It can keep your score and also give you a historical readout of your scores. It can calculate the distance of your last shot. The Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS can group shots together for later analysis.

The graphics on the Sonocaddie are excellent, especially given the fact that the whole device can fit into the palm of your hand. As opposed to some cheaper golf GPS devices, which give you a graphic view of the green only, the Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS Unit gives you a bird’s eye view of the whole course.

Based on some very high-tech GPS technology, the Sonocaddie acquires its signal rapidly. That’s a real plus. There are some golf GPS devices that take a while to find their signal and get situated. The battery lasts 12 hours and is rechargeable.

One of the great features of the Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS Unit is you can use it to actually map hazards and other waypoints along the course you play, which are not already in the system. This is quite useful if you play courses that are not currently mapped. Having said this, the manufacturer is very responsive if you call them up and tell them a course that’s not in their system. It usually only takes a week or two for them to get that course data included.

You download the data for the courses you want. You can buy courses a la carte, or you can buy more than one course with a subscription.

The Sonocaddie V300 Color GPS is a direct competitor of the Garmin Approach G5 and the Callaway uPro. Which is better? It all depends. The Callaway uPro has some graphics features that even the Sonocaddie doesn’t have. For instance, with the Callaway, you get more than one type of view of the hole as you approach. The Garmin Approach G5, on the other hand, comes pre-loaded with courses. So, basically, you have to just figure out what features are more important to you.
