Selecting an EMR system from the incredibly high number of products out there is not an easy thing to do. Federal Stimulus dollars have caused a glut of new electronic medical records applications on the market, with each vendor (new and experienced) looking to cash in. Avoiding a dubious EMR vendor is not difficult, as long as you remember that longer term, cost is just one of many important issues to consider.
Selecting your new EMR software system is a hugely important decision that will shape the way your practice operates for years to come. Making sure you’ve selected not only the right product, but the right vendor is critical, and the proposal process is a key time. There are a number of things you should look for in the best electronic medical records vendor, and here are three of them:
1. Experience – Make sure the vendor you’re looking for has at least five years of experience in the industry. The issue with the recent Federal Stimulus and EMR vendors is that companies have literally “created” their EMR product within the past two years mainly to profit from the government money. These EMR software applications can be shoddy in construction, and poorly supported. Get testimonials, and look at the company’s history once a proposal has been received.
2. Training – First off, how rigorous is your EMR vendors ‘ electronic medical record training staff. Have they been with the company for a long time? Is there a number of different avenues through which your staff can be trained, or is there a single solution that means your staff must travel (a huge expense). An EMR system vendor is only as strong as its training team, and if something seems iffy, find out about it before it’s too late.
3. Superb Support – Adopting an EMR system will always have its sticking points, no matter how skilled your workers are. Your staff needs to be able to solve a issue quickly in order to best serve your patients. This is usually done via either toll-free or web chat. Ask to speak with recent customers that have used your vendors’ support services. How was their experience?
The Federal Stimulus has changed the face of the EMR system industry markedly. Knowing which provider is experienced will mean a smooth installation – something every EMR system adoption should include.
