Dell broadly caters two markets, on one hand where it assures long life, reliability and serviceability to its Business class clientele, it caters the segment of personal computers and Home PCs with the promise of performance and expandability. OptiPlex, Latitude, and Precision are the popular product lines for business class while Inspiron and XPS brands are well known amongst home users. Adding up to this is the range of peripherals with a diversified range of USB keydrives, LCD televisions, and printers.
Looking at the competition in the market Dell’s rivals include Apple, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Sun Microsystems, Gateway, Lenovo, Sony, Acer, Toshiba and Asus. HP poses the major threat out of the above. There is a sharp competition between Dell’s Alienware and Voodoo PC of HP. When we compare the market share for the two, in 2006 Dell occupied about 20 % of the worldwide share of personal computer market, compared to HP with roughly 15%. Dell’s strength lies in its attractive range of personal computer. It has been focusing on this segment to fight its competitors.
Recently Dell was in news for Adamo which is the brand for world’s thinnest laptop. Apart from this it was also caught in controversy about claiming its Latitude D630 and Latitude D830 to be the world’s most secure notebooks without enough evidence proving the claim. Apart from this the Dell is the brand that most of us like and would continue to be one of the best we have.
